The Greatest Tree Ever Cut Down

The largest tree ever cut down was the General Noble Tree (pictured on the left), a giant sequoia from the Converse Basin Grove in the Sierra Mountains of California.

It stood 285 ft tall and had a diameter of 19 ft 6 in at a height of 52 ft off the ground at which the cut was made, though at the base this increased to a diameter of 26 ft and a circumference of 81.5 ft.

It was felled in August 1892 for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago, Illinois, which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ famous voyage across the Atlantic.

Although the General Noble Tree was the largest tree ever to be cut down, it was not the most important!

Thousands of years ago a tree was planted, grew, cut down, and formed into two beams. This tree would be used as a shameful punishment for criminals.

Thieves, murderers, and the worst of criminals would be hung from this tree, and all could see that they were guilty, and were paying the price for their crimes. They would be spectacles of shame.

This tree would witness the last breath, the dying words, the final moments of one’s life.

But one day the way people looked at this tree would completely change!

What seemed to be an ordinary man was nailed to this tree, and was left to die like many before Him. But this man was different. He didn’t fight. He didn’t scream. He didn’t yell words of hate at those that put Him there.

Instead, He said things like “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do”, and most importantly, He said, “It is finished”.

You see, that tree was the Cross and that man was Jesus Christ.

Jesus died to pay for sin.

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death;

Jesus died because He loves you.

Romans 5:8 - But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus paid for your sin so you don’t have to.

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus rose from the dead 3 days after being crucified.

Romans 10:9 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Will you accept this free gift of salvation from sin today?

Romans 10:13 - For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
